When in the year 1997 first investigations had been presented by using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser with 20 Hz and 275 mJ an acceptable preparation speed for hard-tissue was achieved. Today, we are able to use Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers with a power setting of more then 30 Hz and more then 300 mJ. By using these power settings the preparation speed increases that much that we can compare the results with a classical high speed drill. Additionally the newest Erbium laser systems offer the possibility to change the pulse duration and to insert a number of different tip diameter combined with related hand piece. The consequences out of these new technical possibilities are leading to an additional increase of the preparation speed.
The advantages out of Erbium laser technology compared with the traditional bur preparation are a selective caries removal, deep cavity disinfection and a minimal invasive less painful up to pain free cavity preparation combined with a retentive surface in enamel and dentin that no longer request an additional acid aching. Further more the patient is not confronted with the annoying sound and the vibrations of a high-speed drill.
This makes laser technology superior especially in the treatment of children and anxious patients.
As a conclusion one can state, that the treatment combination of Erbium lasers with the latest composite filling material, will be the first choice for an innovative, future orientated dentist in aesthetic dentistry.
